BULGARIA TO IMPLEMENT EU AVIATION AGREEMENT IN 2007

Bulgaria will join the European agreement on a common airspace in 2006. Officially the agreement will be signed in the spring of next year and will come into effect at the beginning of 2007, said Transport Minister Petar Moutafchiev. Foreign air carriers will be given the right to fly to Bulgaria without requesting permission from the national aviation authorities. This will completely liberalise the aviation market. Until recently, the Transport Ministry said that it would wait before accepting the agreement, to enable Bulgarian companies become competitive. Three years ago, Bulgaria refused to sign the agreement, because of the bankruptcy of Balkan Airlines, at the time Bulgaria's national air carrier, Dnevnik newspaper reported. The agreement will create new opportunities for the aviation industry and will increase air traffic. As a result, the number of tourist visits to Bulgaria is expected to increase, because Europeans will have more opportunities to travel. News agency Bloomberg reported that the EU had discussed the liberalisation process with eight countries in South Eastern Europe, as well as with Norway and Iceland.
